Moth Light – Stan Brackhage

Mothlight is an experimental film by Stan Brackhage , released in 1963. The film was created without the use of a camera and involves wings of moths directly stuck onto the film and then ran through a projector with the image projecting onto the screen.

The simplicity an beauty of this piece is for me what makes its so fascinating. It is just raw with no editing or colour grading, portraying the organic as it is but magnified in the projection. We will take inspiration from this as we are looking at things on a smaller scale with the microscope, and also looking at the organic and the reactions that go on inside these animals/organisms.
